Colm Carey is a leading organist and choral director who has gained a reputation as an exciting and distinctive performer. Director of the Choir of the Chapels Royal, HM Tower of London since April 2004, Carey is developing its enviable reputation and expanding its diverse and challenging repertoire.
As an organist, Carey has performed in Australia, Canada, the USA, many European countries and throughout the UK and Ireland. Recent performances have attracted outstanding reviews: “a model of technical command, stylistic awareness and musical insight” according to The Irish Times. In 2004 Carey made his debut as Belfast City Organist with the Ulster Orchestra in the Ulster Hall, performed the opening concert on the newly restored organ of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, and gave recitals at Birmingham Symphony Hall, Manchester and Leicester Cathedrals, and the National Concert Hall in Dublin.
Committed to the development and education of young musicians, Carey gives regular masterclasses and is co-founder and joint Artistic Director of the annual London Organ Summer Course.
CDs include a highly successful recording of J.S.Bach's Art of Fugue, described by Gramophone as “a compellingly fluent account”, and Music for Organ from the Tower of London, which was a Star Recording in The Organ in 2003. Recent releases include The Trumpets that time Forgot with Jonathan Freeman-Attwood and John Wallace, and 1937, which includes the organ sonatas of Whitlock and Bairstow.
2005-6 engagements include appearances with cellist Raphael Wallfisch at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall in an ongoing collaboration based around the Six Cello Suites of J.S.Bach, as well as concerts in Spain, Portugal, Spitalfields Festival, Bath Bach Festival, and a tour to the USA with the Choir of the Chapels Royal, HM Tower of London.
